The Duramax — a joint GM and Isuzu V8 in Chevrolet and GMC trucks — is widely seen as the most refined, balanced diesel ownership experience, helped enormously by the Allison automatic transmission behind it.
It has evolved through a series of letter codes (LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, L5P), and the generation matters: each has its own personality and known quirks, from the early LB7's injectors to the LML's CP4 fuel pump to the strong modern L5P.
