Turbocharger Underboost Condition

Turbo system

Actual boost fell below what the computer commanded. One of the most common diesel codes — and usually a cheap boost leak or a carboned VGT rather than a dead turbo.

Take this seriously. It can trigger a power derate or lead to damage if you keep driving — get it diagnosed promptly.

Common symptoms

  • Sluggish acceleration
  • Power loss / limp mode
  • Whistle under load (leak)

Common causes

  • Boost leak (cracked CAC hose, loose clamp)
  • Sticking VGT vanes
  • Clogged intercooler
  • Wastegate stuck open
  • Boost sensor caked in soot

How it's diagnosed & fixed

  • Boost-leak test the intake first (highest-value check)
  • Inspect the VGT/actuator for sticking
  • Check the boost sensor reading
  • Inspect the intercooler and clamps
