Turbocharger Boost Control 'A' Slow Response

Turbo system

The turbo's boost control responded too slowly to a command — classic symptom of a variable-geometry turbo whose vanes are gummed with soot.

Worth diagnosing soon — left alone, the underlying issue can grow into a bigger, costlier problem.

Common symptoms

  • Lazy spool / slow boost
  • Reduced power
  • Weak exhaust brake

Common causes

  • Carboned, sticking VGT vanes
  • Worn actuator
  • Soot/coking in the turbine housing

How it's diagnosed & fixed

  • Clean or service the VGT
  • Test actuator response
  • Address the soot source (EGR/fueling) so it doesn't recur
