Turbocharger Overboost Condition

Turbo system

Boost pressure exceeded the commanded target. On a variable-geometry turbo this is often stuck-closed vanes; the computer may derate to protect the engine.

Take this seriously. It can trigger a power derate or lead to damage if you keep driving — get it diagnosed promptly.

Common symptoms

  • Sudden power cut / limp mode
  • A surge then loss of power
  • Check-engine light under load

Common causes

  • Stuck VGT vanes (carbon)
  • Boost control / actuator fault
  • Stuck wastegate
  • Boost sensor error

How it's diagnosed & fixed

  • Inspect/clean the VGT or exercise the vanes
  • Test the boost control actuator
  • Verify the boost sensor against actual pressure
