P242FSerious
Diesel Particulate Filter Restriction — Ash Accumulation
The DPF is restricted by ash, the non-burnable residue left after regen. Unlike soot, ash doesn't burn off — at high mileage the filter eventually needs cleaning or replacement.
Take this seriously. It can trigger a power derate or lead to damage if you keep driving — get it diagnosed promptly.
Common symptoms
- Power derate
- Frequent regens that don't help
- DPF warning
Common causes
- High-mileage ash load (normal accumulation)
- Oil consumption adding ash
- Pressure sensor fault
How it's diagnosed & fixed
- Confirm ash vs. soot load on a scan tool
- Professionally clean (bake/flush) or replace the DPF
- Address any oil consumption
